HIV Prevention

Prevention Strategies

The tools exist to stop new HIV infections in Utah. The goal of the HIV Prevention team is to provide statewide management, education, and training to prevent HIV/AIDS in an inclusive, non-judgmental, and empathetic manner.

The HIV Prevention team works with local health departments and community-based organizations to provide:

  • HIV testing to offer access to rapid HIV tests and prevention counseling for a free or low cost.
  • Linkage to Care to ensure that HIV-positive individuals are receiving the care that they need
  • Partner Services to notify Utahns of potential exposure to HIV, and provide testing, with the goal of preventing the further transmission of HIV.
  • Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) services.
  • Syringe Service Programs (SSPs) and community-based prevention programs can provide a range of assistance to prevent infectious disease and connect communities to substance abuse treatment and services.
  • Disease monitoring to ensure potential cases or suspected networks of cases are investigated, linked to care, and provided partner services.
  • HIV Reports that identify current trends in new diagnoses and summarize what proportion of individuals living with HIV are engaged at each stage of HIV medical care, from the initial diagnosis to viral suppression.
  • Strategic and integrated planning aimed at allowing local HIV prevention and treatment programs, service providers, stakeholders, and community members the opportunity to partner with UDOH to address how Utah can collaborate to accomplish the activities set by the CDC.
